Food Fights: What the Crowd Really Thinks About Food

August 2026 · Crowd Data

Nothing starts a fight faster than food. So we fed the great culinary debates to thousands of Lyre players — who answer in their own words, no menu of options — and let the crowd render its verdict. Some were unanimous. Some nearly came to blows. Here's what's actually on everyone's plate.

These are real answer distributions from completed Lyre games: people typed freely and we grouped equivalent answers. When a food wins big here, it won without anyone suggesting it.

The one everyone agrees ruins a sandwich

What's one ingredient that ruins a sandwich? → Mayo, 27%, with Mustard (22%), Pickles (13%), and Tomatoes (12%) close behind.

Mayo takes the crown, but notice how spread out this is — four condiments splitting the vote. The crowd knows sandwiches can be ruined; it just can't agree on the weapon. (If you're pro-mayo, you are officially outnumbered but not alone.)

The soda war has a clear winner

Best type of soda? → Coca-Cola, 54%. Diet Coke took a strong 34%.

What's remarkable: 88% of the vote went to some form of Coke. Dr Pepper (5%) and everything else are fighting over the scraps. The cola wars ended and nobody told Pepsi.

The "worst fast food" hot seat

Worst fast food restaurant? → Arby's, 33%, ahead of Burger King (19%), Taco Bell (15%), and McDonald's (10%).

"We have the meats" — and, apparently, the reputation. Arby's ran away with a title nobody wants.

The debates that split the table

Then there are the ones where the crowd genuinely couldn't agree:

And the near-unanimous ones

Why we know all this

Every one of these is a real question from Lyre, the daily game where you score by matching the crowd instead of being right. The skill is exactly what this article measures: knowing when a food question is a landslide (Coke, Brie) and when it's a coin flip (summer food, reclining seats). Guess the crowd, not your own taste. That's the whole point.
