The Verdicts: 12 Great Debates, Settled by the Crowd
Every group chat has the same unwinnable arguments. So we put them to a much bigger jury: thousands of Lyre players, each answering in their own words with no options to pick from. Some debates ended in a landslide. Some came down to a photo finish. Here are the crowd's verdicts.
As always, these are real answer distributions from completed Lyre games — people typed freely, and we grouped equivalent answers. Nobody was handed a list, which makes the agreement all the more telling.
The landslides — cases the crowd closed fast
Some "debates" turned out not to be debates at all. The jury barely deliberated:
- If animals could talk, which would be the rudest? → Cats, 60%. (Monkeys, a distant 6%.) Cat owners know.
- Fiction or non-fiction? → Fiction, 79%. The people want a story.
- Which ancient wonder would you most want to see? → Pyramids of Giza, 78%.
- Best country in Asia to live in? → Japan, 60% (Singapore a respectable 22%).
- Best football movie of all time? → Remember the Titans, 50%, with Rudy (17%) taking silver.
The nail-biters — where the room actually split
Then there are the ones that earned their reputation as arguments. These came down to the wire:
Most beautiful US state → Hawaii 32%, California 32%. A dead heat. (Montana snuck in at 11%.)
- Woody or Buzz as the childhood toy? → Woody 55%, Buzz 37% — closer than any Toy Story loyalist will admit.
- Best arcade game? → Pac-Man 41%, Skee-Ball 32%. A generational standoff.
- How much cash do you keep in your wallet? → $20 (33%) barely beat $100 (30%) — the crowd is split between "coffee money" and "just in case."
- What time do you eat dinner? → 6:00 PM (47%) edged 7:00 PM (33%). The 6-o'clock camp wins, but 7 is coming for them.
- TV family to be born into? → the Dunphys (Modern Family, 27%) over the Kardashians (19%) and the Brady Bunch (14%).
The lesson for anyone who plays
Notice the pattern: the winnable move in Lyre isn't having the "best" opinion — it's spotting which debates are landslides and which are coin flips. Confidently type "Cats" and you're rich. Confidently type "Hawaii" for prettiest state and you're only half-right, because half the room said California.
